The college football community is mourning the sudden passing of Louis “Lou” DiRienzo, a highly respected defensive coordinator, mentor, and former standout student-athlete from Yonkers, New York. He died unexpectedly on Saturday, June 27, 2026, at the age of 37, leaving behind a legacy of leadership, excellence, and dedication to the game.
A native of Yonkers, DiRienzo first earned recognition as an exceptional football player at New Rochelle High School, where he was an All-State, All-County, All-Section, and All-League selection. His outstanding career later earned him a place on New York’s Third-Team All-Decade roster, reflecting the impact he made as one of the region’s premier defensive players.
DiRienzo continued his playing career at Southern Connecticut State University, serving as team captain during his senior season while earning a bachelor’s degree in exercise science in 2016. His passion for football quickly transitioned into coaching, where he built a reputation as one of the brightest defensive minds in Division III football.
After joining Springfield College as a graduate assistant, DiRienzo played an instrumental role in the Pride’s rise to national prominence. As defensive coordinator, he helped lead Springfield to multiple conference championships and deep NCAA Division III playoff runs, including a historic Sweet 16 appearance. His accomplishments earned him recognition as the 2023 Gridiron Club of New England Division II/III Co-Assistant Coach of the Year.
His coaching career also included stops at Wagner College, Rutgers University, and Monmouth University, where colleagues praised his football intelligence, relentless work ethic, and ability to develop student-athletes both on and off the field.
Beyond the sidelines, Lou was remembered as a respected mentor, loyal friend, and inspirational leader whose influence extended far beyond wins and championships. His passion for teaching, commitment to his players, and love for the game left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to work alongside him.
