With profound sadness and heartfelt sympathy, family, friends, teammates, classmates, and members of the Ocean Springs community are mourning the heartbreaking loss of Nolan Xavier Wells, an 18-year-old whose disappearance and the subsequent search for him united an entire community in hope before ending in unimaginable sorrow.
According to Jackson County Sheriff John Ledbetter, a body was recovered on Monday morning on Horn Island during an extensive multi-agency search operation. At the time of the recovery, officials had not yet formally confirmed the identity of the individual, but the search had been focused on locating Nolan Xavier Wells, who had been reported missing after he was last seen on Saturday, July 4, at approximately 3:00 p.m.
The search effort brought together numerous agencies and volunteers determined to find Nolan. The Jackson County Sheriff’s Department worked alongside the Mississippi Department of Marine Resources, Gulf Islands National Seashore, the United States Coast Guard, and the United Cajun Navy in a coordinated operation spanning both land and water. A command post was established at the Lake Mars Boat Launch in Ocean Springs, where search teams worked tirelessly, refusing to give up hope as they combed the surrounding areas.
Throughout the search, countless members of the community followed every update with anxious hearts, praying for a miracle and hoping Nolan would be found safe.
