With deep respect and heartfelt sorrow, the racing community honors the life of James W. “Cowboy” Kennedy, affectionately known as the “Flying Cowboy,” who passed away on April 2, 2026. A lifelong racing enthusiast and a pillar of dirt-track racing, Jim’s legacy spans generations and leaves an enduring mark on the sport he loved.
Born on August 7, 1934, in Curryville, Pennsylvania, Jim was the son of the late James B. Kennedy and Florence G. Kennedy. From humble beginnings, he built a life defined by passion, perseverance, and dedication—qualities that would come to define both his racing career and his personal life.
Jim began racing in 1958, embarking on an extraordinary journey that would span an incredible 68 years behind the wheel. Competing in both 305 and 410 sprint cars, he became a familiar and respected figure at tracks like Port Royal Speedway. His love for racing never faded; he continued to compete well into August 2025—a testament to his unwavering commitment and enduring spirit.
In recognition of his remarkable contributions, Jim was inducted into the PA Racesavers Sprint Car Hall of Fame, a well-deserved honor for a man whose presence helped shape the sport at the grassroots level. To fans, fellow racers, and friends, he was more than a competitor—he was a symbol of dedication, resilience, and true passion.
Beyond the track, Jim lived a life grounded in hard work and family. Before retiring in 1996, he worked various jobs and was a proud member of the Carpenters Union, embodying a strong work ethic that carried through every aspect of his life.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Marlene, with whom he shared an incredible 72 years of marriage—a testament to love, loyalty, and partnership. He also leaves behind his children: Michael; Barry; Jay (Becky); and Linda (Gary), along with grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren who will carry forward his legacy.
Jim “Cowboy” Kennedy will be remembered not only for his achievements on the track but also for the life he lived—with passion, integrity, and heart.
