The Grayson community is mourning the tragic loss of 44-year-old Sharell Canty, who was found dead inside her home on Wilkerson Way after suffering an apparent gunshot wound. Authorities say the heartbreaking incident happened Sunday morning in what investigators believe may have been a domestic-related shooting.
Gwinnett County police responded to the 300 block of Wilkerson Way around 8:42 a.m. after a neighbor discovered Canty inside the residence and contacted emergency officials. When officers arrived at the scene, they found Canty deceased inside the home. The shocking discovery left neighbors stunned as crime scene investigators remained at the residence for hours gathering evidence and processing the scene.
Police later confirmed that one person had been taken into custody in connection with the shooting. On Monday, investigators identified the suspect as 48-year-old Stephany Byrom, also of Grayson. Authorities charged Byrom with malice murder, felony murder, aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony.
Although investigators have not publicly explained the exact relationship between Canty and Byrom, officials stated the shooting appears to be domestic in nature. Authorities have also not disclosed a possible motive as the investigation continues.
Neighbors described the scene as emotional and heartbreaking in the otherwise quiet and family-friendly community. Residents reported seeing ambulances, multiple police vehicles, and yellow crime scene tape surrounding the home. One witness recalled seeing a woman arrive at the scene and break down crying after learning what had happened. Others said the ambulance leaving without sirens made it clear the situation was extremely serious.
Friends and community members are now remembering Sharell Canty for the life she lived rather than the tragic circumstances surrounding her death. Loved ones describe her as a caring and compassionate person whose kindness touched many people in her community. Her sudden passing has left family, friends, and neighbors grieving as they try to cope with the devastating loss.
