A rapidly spreading wildfire in southwestern Colorado continues to threaten communities across Ouray and Gunnison counties as the Gold Mountain Fire grows to nearly 25,000 acres with no reported containment. Fueled by extreme heat, very low humidity, and persistent Red Flag Warning conditions, the fire is moving quickly through steep mountain terrain and has prompted widespread mandatory evacuations across multiple zones.
Officials report that the wildfire began on June 27 on private land near Gold Mountain Ranch and has since expanded across rugged ridgelines toward Cow Creek and surrounding drainage areas. Fire behavior has been described as highly erratic, with strong winds driving rapid uphill runs and spotting that has made containment efforts extremely difficult for crews on the ground.
More than 500 firefighters and support personnel are currently assigned to the incident, operating under a unified command structure supported by heavy equipment and aerial firefighting resources. Aircraft continue to drop water and retardant in an effort to slow the fire’s spread, while ground teams focus on structure protection and establishing defensive containment lines where terrain allows.
Mandatory evacuation orders remain in place for several residential areas in Ouray County, including multiple zones along Cow Creek and nearby mountain communities. Additional areas remain under pre-evacuation warnings as officials closely monitor shifting fire behavior. Emergency management agencies have also established evacuation centers and livestock relocation sites to support displaced residents and animals.
The fire has also impacted critical infrastructure in the region, including damage to communication systems that temporarily disrupted emergency alert capabilities in some areas. Authorities have warned that connectivity issues may continue as the fire moves through remote terrain.
Transportation routes have been heavily affected, with sections of Highway 550 operating under restricted access while secondary mountain roads remain closed. Officials are urging travelers to avoid the area and rely on official state and county traffic and emergency updates, as navigation systems may not reflect real-time closures or hazardous conditions.
