Gunnar Charles Svendsen, 58, of Point Pleasant Borough, New Jersey, passed away peacefully on Thursday, July 2, 2026, at his home. He is remembered as a devoted family member, respected colleague, and cherished member of the local running and sports community whose presence left a lasting impact on everyone who knew him.
A graduate of Point Pleasant Borough High School’s Class of 1986, Gunnar went on to pursue higher education at Ocean County College, Salem University, and the University of Tampa, where he was recruited to the track team. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Sports Management in 1993, beginning a lifelong connection to athletics, fitness, and community sports.
Gunnar spent nearly three decades working at Miles Ahead Sports in Wall Township, where he became widely known for his expertise, professionalism, and genuine care for customers. Colleagues and customers alike valued his ability to connect with people and help athletes of all levels find the right support for their running journeys. His workplace described him as dependable beyond measure and a steady, positive presence who was always ready to help.
Outside of work, Gunnar was a passionate runner and cyclist who competed in numerous events, including the New York City Marathon, the Boston Marathon, the Spring Lake 5, and the Turkey Trot. In the 2004 New York City Marathon, he placed 191st out of more than 36,000 runners, a testament to his dedication and athletic ability. He was also a member of the Jersey Shore Running Club and a longtime competitor on the Miles Ahead Race Team.
Friends and fellow athletes remember Gunnar as a quiet but determined competitor, known for his discipline, humility, and sportsmanship. He was a familiar face at local races and a constant supporter of youth sports, often seen cheering at field hockey, lacrosse, and track events. His enthusiasm for sports extended to his lifelong support of the Miami Dolphins, New York Islanders, New York Mets, and New York Knicks.
