The Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) community is mourning the loss of Professor Paul Veys, a highly respected specialist whose groundbreaking work in paediatric blood disorders and bone marrow transplantation transformed the lives of countless children and families.
Professor Veys passed away on July 18, 2026, peacefully at home with his family around him, according to a tribute shared by colleagues in the European Society for Blood and Marrow Transplantation.
Throughout his distinguished career, Professor Veys was recognized as a pioneer in children’s bone marrow transplantation. He served as Director of the Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT) Unit at Great Ormond Street Hospital from 1994 to 2020, where he helped build and lead a world-renowned transplant program.
His work helped advance safer and more effective treatments for children with serious medical conditions. Colleagues remembered him for pioneering approaches including reduced intensity conditioning for children with non-malignant diseases, supporting the use of cord blood transplantation, and contributing to early developments in allogeneic CAR T-cell therapy.
Beyond his medical achievements, Professor Veys was admired for his compassion, leadership, and dedication to mentoring the next generation of healthcare professionals. Those who worked alongside him described him as an inspiring figure who cared deeply about his patients and the teams around him.
His influence reached thousands of children treated through the transplant unit and extended throughout the wider paediatric medical community in the UK and internationally.
